Historic Ohio skyscraper (FirstMerit Tower) picks Aquatherm to replace wasteful steel piping system

Historic Ohio skyscraper FirstMerit Tower, picks Aquatherm to replace wasteful steel piping system for its new closed-loop chilled-water system.

Aquatherm used their famous Blue Pipe for the project.

The Challenge:

FirstMerit Tower the historic, 1931 skyscraper needed a dependable piping solution for its new closed-loop chilled-water system; it also needed to be easy to install in an occupied building.

The Solution:

Both Aquatherm North America's design and fabrication services team and the contractor fabricated pieces of the new closed-loop chilled-water system helping the installation process moved quickly and decrease downtime as well as labor costs.

  • The advantages of using Aquatherm:

  • Aquatherm PP-R piping's light weight and easy heat-fusion welding saved the owner at least $20,000 in labor

  • The perfect solution for a sensitive, historic bank environment, heat-fusion eliminated toxic materials, glues and resins as well as fumes and gases and open flames from the piping installation procedure

  • Fabricating Aquatherm piping systems on the ground created a safer more streamlined installation process

Kevin Kindbom, V.P. and Co-Owner, Bandwen Williams Kindbom, Akron, OH said:

This project changed the way I think about Aquatherm. We saw some of the intangibles: the less impact Aquatherm makes on a building structure because it's lighter, which also makes it easier to lift or monkey into small existing spaces; no welding; no odors - all of these things make Aquatherm a great application that we hadn't thought about in the past but certainly will in the future.
